Basic cross stiching - Step 1

Anda baru nak menceburi bidang cross stich (jahit silang pangkah)??

OR, ramai yang dah expert sebenarnya?

Actually, I've started this, since I was 10. Masa tu project jahitan for that year is buat beg dari cross stich. I've got design 'rumah' for my cross stich. Excited nyer...cantik, plus it was so easy.
(i've got the best project in my class that year, hehe)

Untuk step 1/Cara pertama: Apa peralatan yang di perlu kan ?

a. Kain cross stich.
Kain cross stich adalah berlubang2 dalam petak2 empat segi dan juga di kenali sebagai Aida.
Terdapat berbagai jenis Aida mengikut saiz petaknya.

Yang paling terkenal/biasa digunakan adalah 14 count Aida, 16 count Aida & 18 count Aida.

14 counts Aida (light blue)

16 counts Aida (white/ecru)

14 count being the larger square size/easiest & 18 counts is the hardest, I can say, sebab
lubangnya halus2 i.e. mencabar bijik mata.

Tapi petak yg paling besar rasanya 8 counts kut. Tapi that is more for org2 yg dah rabun or
for kids. I jarang pulak jumpa Aida 8 counts ni.

14 counts adalah size normal. It is just nice & finishing nyer kemas.
Untuk 18 counts pulak, this is more to expert level coz ianya agak susah coz petak2 nya yg quite small. Tapi hasilnya very fine/halus & kemas. Selain itu, hasil cross stich siap utk 18 counts is a bit smaller than 14 counts - sebab petak2 nya yg halus.

18 counts Aida

To me, it is sangat cantik. I'll normally buat yg 16 & 18 counts. Tu yg berpinar bijik mata, hehe.
Too bad, tak nampak sangat beza petak2 from gambar2 ni.

BTW, theres also zweigart etc, yang lebih halus. Or, some experts may also cross stich on linen. Mintak ampun, I cant do that, hanya yg pro2 aje yg sanggup jahit yg halus2 ni. So, i'll not cover that at the moment.

Latest in market, now ada Aida yang ada printed background i.e. ada 'love' scattered, or stars etc...its quite cute, tapi rasa cam susah je nak match with design, hehe.

I bought few years back- Aida 18 counts (size 50cm x 110cm) for RM28/-.Now ni, tak tau la dah baper hengget.

b. Jarum

Normally ianya di panggil tapestry needle. Tapi I call it 'jarum cross stich' aje.

Selalunya, we have to purchase it in 1 set (refer pic). But maybe some kedai allow you to buy just 1 needle, as you required. I couldnt really recall how much for a set. RMbelas2 kut?

The size differs, coz it depends on the Aida counts. Logically, 14 counts Aida will require a larger needle, vice versa. (I believe below pic shows the number of Aida counts & its needle)

In few occasions, my jarum patah, (the small needle). So, my advise, beli 2 or 3 jarum, just in case i.e. patah or hilang.



c. Threads


What i like most about cross stich is its colors!!!
Its all about colors!
Kadang2 pegi kedai, dok ghalit tengok benang, coz..it was so colorful!!

When I first do my cross stich with my own pocket money - that was around '95-'97, the cost of benang is RM1.20. Now, it is RM1.80, gulp...If you are lucky, u may get it around RM1.70 I rasa.

According to my mum, masa she first started her project, the thread is just RM0.30. that was way back in 70's.

Jenama yang biasa digunakan di Malaysia adalah DMC & Anchor.

d. Thread sorter

What is 'thread sorter'?


Thread sorter cuma boleh di dapati dalam kits. Itu pun, some kits in the 90's or earlier, takde 'thread sorter' ni (mas tu tak de org invent lagi kut).
Thread sorter amat penting utk sort/susun kan benang2 kita supaya tak kusut/bercampur2.
Maybe boleh di beli jugak di kedai2 jahitan, OR, boleh buat sendiri (use manila card). Buat hole & mark its number.
